Oscar Results: The Loser Is…

Well, the votes are in, and I didn’t do too bad.  Of course, I had this pegged as the gayest awards show ever.  That’s right, even gayer than when Hugh Jackman hosted the Tony awards. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Well, the results are in and the first award of the night blew my prediction away.  George Clooney is like the anti-Capote and he walked away with best supporting actor.

Best Actor: Philip Seymour Hoffman in “Capote” - WINNER!

Best Supporting Actor: My pick - Jake Gyllenhaal.  - WRONG! The winner was the decidedly not gay George Clooney in a decidedly not gay role.  Who would have thunk?

Best Actress: Felicity Huffman in “Transamerica”  - WRONG!  The female-born Reese Witherspoon won for playing a female.

Supporting Actress: Catherine Keener in “Capote” - WRONG!  Rachel Weisz walked away with it.

Animated film: “Wallace & Gromit in the Curse of the Were-Rabbit”  - WINNER!  I love it when animators or techies win awards.  They’re so comfortatble acting like complete nerds on stage.

Cinematography: “Memoirs of a Geisha”  - WINNER!

Costume Design: “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”  - WRONG! A Depp-less award show!  “Geisha” won.  After several awards, I realized that Gary Marshal just took his entire “Chicago” technical staff and transplanted them on “Geisha”  Looks like the strategy worked.

Directing: “Brokeback Mountain”  Lee atones for “The Hulk” - WINNER!  Now if we can just keep Ang Lee away from Stan Lee…

Documentary: “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room”  WRONG!  The penguins marched all over Enron.  And the directors acted like a bunch of nerds.

Music: “Travelin’ Thru” from “Transamerica”  - WRONG! Gagnsta Rap finally got Oscar love.  I wonder how soon it will be until one of the awards ends up on the end of a necklace?

Best Picture:  “Brokeback Mountain”  - WRONG!  One of the pictures that I thought should have won did!  So much for the Shakespear in Love theory.

Sound Editing:  “War of the Worlds” - WRONG! - Jackson’s Ape crushed the aliens.

Visual Effects: “King Kong”  WINNER!  Jackson didn’t get the big awards, but knows how to put a film together.

Adapted Screenplay: “Brokeback Mountain” - WINNER!  This was a hard one to miss.

Original Screenplay: “Crash”  - WINNER!  I wanted Allen to win, but knew the racial drama would push more buttons.

Ok, so I lied.  I was 7-8.  Not enough to get in the playoffs, not even in the NHL.  Next time I’ll do better, right?

There were other winners and losers that night.  Jessica Alba won by getting more attention that her more-talented competition.  I think it’s a good think Ryan Seacrest was kept a distance away from her.

Speaking of restraining orders that should be, there were no reports of Isaak Misrahi groping anyone.  Scarlet Johannsen would count that as a winner.

I didn’t mind John Stewart’s job hosting the awards.  I might have been the only one.

Rachel McAdams lost big time.  She was stuck on a video hosting the nerd awards from the night before.  Maybe next year they’ll let her show up in person?

Finally, there was an award that went to two people.  The first guy spoke and the second guy got played off before he even got a word out.  That hurts worse than when they handed technical awards out in the aisles last year.  If you know more about that, by all means, email me.
