Jessica Simpson just managed to politicize something by trying to not politicize it. President George Bush was left feeling like a Lachey after Simpson reportedly backed out of a Republican fund raiser where she could chat up her charity, Operation Smile, with the President.
It was a lesser-of-two-evils scenario and I think Simpson made the wrong choice. If she appeared with the president, at best, there would have been the typical photo op, with her smiling, and President Bush awkwardly smiling back. Case closed.
Instead, she inadvertently dissed Bush and the whole Republican party. Its as if she’s the cheerleader and conservatives are the nerds. No way she wants to be seen with that crowd. She might not get a date to the prom.
And one must hope that the Republicans aren’t so desperate for celebrity endorsements that they went after Daisy Duke. Talk show hosts already have enough “Dubya is dumb” jokes without adding the “Chicken of the Sea” girl to the mix.
In the end, Republicans are seen as the ones who want poor children to have facial deformities and Simpson is seen as the dumb but stuck up girl in high school. I’m pretty sure that one of those two impressions is correct.
