Well, here it comes: a breakup report for Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes has happened, and they haven’t even had a kid yet. I honestly don’t think anyone thought they ever were a real couple, but they have followed the classic pattern of breakups.
From what I can tell, modern celebrity breakups follow this pattern:
- Deny
- Deny
- Deny
- Seen on red carpet without significant other
- Candid shots with another lover
- The publicist’s statement that “they hope to remain close friends”
- Subtle, but nasty comments about each other in interviews.
- News of new lover made public
- Repeat process with new lover.
There are a thousand variations on that theme, but my sad bet is that it will all play out in this case. Tom Cruise took that first “Deny” to new levels with his famous couch jump on Oprah. This is the second denial. Maybe I’m wrong, and they will become the perfect couple, and rival Brad and Angelina for global domination.
What’s sad is that somebody’s child is involved in this mess. If Cruise and Holmes are just waiting until the child is born, there’s going to be one more single mother (albeit a very wealthy single mother) out there.
Time will tell. I could be wrong. But my finely tuned celebrity instincts give me a bad feeling about the whole thing.
